Payment posting
Short answer
Payment posting is the step where a billing team records what was paid on each claim. Using an 835 ERA or an EOB, they apply payments, contractual adjustments, denials, and patient responsibility to the matching claim lines in the practice management system. Accurate posting keeps balances, patient statements, and denial follow-up correct.
What gets posted besides the payment?
Posting usually includes contractual adjustments, write-offs, denial reasons, and transfers of remaining balances to secondary insurance or the patient. Each entry is tied to the claim line it affects.
What is the difference between auto-posting and manual posting?
Auto-posting imports 835 ERA files directly into the billing system. Manual posting covers paper or PDF EOBs and exceptions the system cannot match, and it requires staff to key in the details.
