EFT trace number

Short answer

An EFT trace number is the unique identifier for an electronic payment from a payer. It appears in the 835 ERA’s TRN segment and in the bank deposit details, which lets billing teams reconcile each deposit to the remittance that explains it. For paper payments, the check number plays the same role in reconciliation.

Why is the trace number important for reconciliation?

A single EFT often pays many claims at once. The trace number links the deposit in the bank account to the 835 that breaks it down by claim and service line.

What happens when the ERA and EFT don’t match?

Mismatches usually point to a missing or delayed ERA, a payment bundled differently than expected, or a recoupment. Teams typically contact the payer or clearinghouse with the trace number to resolve it.
