Remittance advice

Short answer

Remittance advice is the payer’s explanation that accompanies a payment to a provider. It lists each claim covered by the payment, with billed, allowed, and paid amounts, adjustment reason codes, and patient responsibility. It arrives electronically as an 835 ERA or on paper and PDF as an EOB, and it drives payment posting.

Is remittance advice the same as an EOB?

The terms overlap. Remittance advice is the general term for a payment explanation sent to a provider. An EOB is one format of it, and an 835 ERA is the electronic standard.

What should you check on a remittance advice?

Confirm that the payment total matches the deposit, that each claim matches your records, and that every adjustment code makes sense for the contract.
